Banks and Lloyd remains committed to providing green services to tiling market

Following a change of leadership early this year, managing director Daria Banks confirmed Banks and Lloyd’s commitment and intention to double down on making the transportation of tiles as carbon neutral as possible.

Banks said: “We understand how important it is for the tiling community to reach its sustainability goals, and logistics play a significant part of the challenge that lies ahead. Tiles are a heavy commodity, and the heavier the goods, the bigger the C02 footprint when it comes to their transportation. We remain deeply involved in the TTA Sustainability Working Group and have worked together with its members to help calculate their current C02 footprint of relevant shipments, and make it clear which trade routes are preferable when it comes to lower those C02 emissions by any factor.

“We have been following closely the developments of the IMO (international Maritime Organisation) and are pleased to learn that its ‘getting to zero’ coalition has readjusted it’s target of eliminating 50% of C02 emissions by 2050 to instead aiming for a zero or ‘close to zero’ C02 emissions by 2050 target. The journey to this target isn’t going to be easy, and there are still many question marks that remain unanswered, but the renewed and stronger commitment by the IMO provides a much more optimistic outlook for the shipping industry.

“The technology is there to achieve this,” Banks concluded. “It’s down to shipping lines and governments to incentivise the switch and really get the ball rolling – thankfully the UK has been identified as an ideal candidate to create a ‘green corridor’ between itself and Spain, where we are aware a lot of ceramic products are produced. As soon as anything develops on these ‘green corridors’ we will commit ourselves to fully supporting them and making sure this sustainable push really takes off.”
