Pantone announces colour of the year for 2023

Pantone has once again announced its colour of the year, an annual designation which will influence design trends throughout the next 12 months. Beginning in 1999, the US company has chosen one colour a year to represent and encapsulate the dominant aesthetic mood of the period. This year, that colour is Viva Magenta, a “nuanced crimson red”.

“Viva Magenta 18-750, vibrates with vim and vigor,” the company says. “It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”

“It is an animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement. Pantone 18-1750 Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit.”

In this year’s selection process, the company says it observed a “heightened appreciation and awareness of nature represented by countless lifestyle trends”. Consumers are said to be incorporating more living things into their homes, such as plants, florals, living walls, and restorative outdoor spaces. People are experiencing renewed enjoyment in travel, sports, and outdoor recreation after pausing these activities throughout the pandemic. “We’re more careful to protect our bodies as a result of the public health crises – we look to apply and ingest trusted, life-giving ingredients. All of these lifestyle trends speak to the heartiness of natural forces,” the company says.

The colour’s organic origins reportedly hail from the cochineal beetle. This insect produces carmine dye, described as one of the most precious, strongest, and brightest of the natural dye family.
To what extent will this bold colour impact the tile market? That remains to be seen, however the Surface Design Show in February may provide some early indication of whether suppliers agree with Pantone’s assessment.
