An extensive tiling project has been completed at Tower Hamlets new Town Hall using a Mapei installation system. The project, which included the reception area, washrooms and “porte-cochere” entrance was completed by Stone & Ceramic for Bouygues. Tiles specified included natural stone, brick-slips, porcelain and ceramics.
Located within the former Royal London Hospital building in Whitechapel – which had been vacant since 2013 – the project was designed to bring the Grade II listed building “back into the community”. Working closely with Tower Hamlets Conservation Officers, Bouygues reportedly preserved the integrity of the building and restored many historic features. Inside, the town hall now provides over 1,500 workspaces, meeting rooms and welfare facilities, while the entire ground floor is dedicated to public use. The design was created by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
The tile installation by Stone & Ceramic included 1200x600mm terrazzo tiles, brick slips, Portland stone, 1200x600mm porcelain tiles and 150x150mm ceramic tiles. To prepare surfaces, two Mapei products were specified: Nivoplan smoothing mortar and fibre-reinforced Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 levelling compound. Tiles were installed using three Mapei cementitious adhesives, which are each said to feature a very low VOC formulation; they included Keraquick S1 quick-setting, deformable adhesive, Keraflex high performance adhesive and Keraflex Maxi S1 – a deformable cementitious adhesive with an extended open time.
Two of the company’s grouts were used to install the tiles: Kerapoxy Easy Design, described as a very low VOC epoxy formulation with improved workability, and Zero range Ultracolor Plus grout – Mapei’s anti-efflorescence, quick-setting and drying polymer-modified grout, featuring water-repellent DropEffect and mould-resistant BioBlock and with CO2 emissions entirely offset in the entire life cycle. Mapesil AC highly elastic and mould-resistant acetic silicone sealant was also applied, to create strong seals throughout the washrooms.
