Jim Percival, Technical Director at Palace Chemicals, considers the increasing popularity of flowable grouts.
Ease of application, excellent coverage, and long-lasting performance have combined to increase the popularity of flowable grouts for both internal and external floor tiling jobs. Designed with a smooth, flowable consistency, these grouts flow and penetrate effortlessly into the full depth of tile joints, ensuring complete filling with minimal effort while delivering a professional finish.
Unlike non-flowable grouts, which are applied with a float, they are typically applied with a large oversized floor squeegee, being washed across the whole surface of the tile, finding their own way into the grout joints. This means they are able to achieve full joint penetration. Unlike stiffer grout mixes that can leave air pockets or voids if not pressed in properly, flowable grout spreads evenly and fills joints completely. This creates a stronger bond between tiles and reduces the risk of cracking, water ingress, and premature joint failure.
Ease and speed of installation mean that installers can cover large floor areas more quickly and with less physical effort. This can improve productivity and reduce costs on commercial projects, due to reduced labour costs and shorter project schedules.
For internal floor tiling, flowable grouts provide a smooth, uniform appearance that enhances the overall aesthetic of the finished floor. They are suitable for use with ceramic, porcelain, and most natural stone tiles and are available in a wide range of colours to complement different design styles. Many modern formulations also offer stain resistance and are easy to clean, helping to maintain their appearance over time.
In external applications, the fully filled joints help prevent water penetration, reducing the likelihood of frost damage and protecting the integrity of the tiled surface.
Another advantage is compatibility with underfloor heating systems. The complete filling of grout joints contributes to improved stability while allowing the tiled floor to expand and contract more evenly during temperature changes. This helps minimise stress on both the tiles and the grout.
While flowable grouts provide an efficient, reliable, and durable solution for floor tiling projects both indoors and outdoors, their easy-flowing and fast-setting properties mean they require a little more care during application.
With the right preparation and post-application treatment technique, they offer excellent coverage and a quick, effective way to achieve a high quality finish on both internal and external tile floor surfaces.
