Small format tile producer Decocer explains why the future of tiling is bespoke
For decades, the ceramic industry was driven by standardisation, developing products designed to meet the needs of as many projects as possible. However, contemporary architecture and interior design have shifted this approach.
Today, every project demands bespoke solutions, and it is the materials that must adapt to the design concept, the space and the identity the project seeks to express.
In this context, the concept of tailor-made has taken on a new level of significance. Personalisation is no longer simply about selecting a different colour or modifying a format. It means rethinking ceramic design from the very beginning, considering its geometry, texture, relief, finish, functionality and relationship with the surrounding materials.
Rather than being perceived as an isolated element, each ceramic piece becomes part of a wider architectural composition, contributing to the overall language of the space.
In this respect, ceramics offer a unique platform for creative exploration. Their versatility makes it possible to shape rhythm, depth, visual continuity and contrast, while maintaining the technical performance expected of the material, including durability, strength and ease of maintenance. As a result, ceramic surfaces are no longer merely functional finishes; they become an integral design tool, capable of bringing character, coherence and identity to a project.
The Casa AVVA project, developed in collaboration with Ana Arquitectura, is a clear example of this design philosophy. The project was conceived around a simple yet powerful idea: every design decision should contribute to expressing the personality of those who live in the home. Within this dialogue, ceramics interact naturally with materials such as clay paint and restored timber, introducing texture, continuity and a distinctive presence without dominating the architectural composition.
Projects like this demonstrate that personalisation is no longer the exception but an essential part of the creative process, requiring closer collaboration between architects, interior designers and manufacturers. Selecting a finished product is no longer enough; projects increasingly demand partners capable of listening, interpreting ideas and supporting the development of bespoke solutions from the earliest design stages.
At DECOCER, this approach has defined who we are for more than three decades. Our expertise in small-format ceramics and bespoke ceramic developments enables us to explore colours, reliefs, finishes and compositions tailored to the specific requirements of each project.
Rather than expanding a catalogue, our goal is to expand the possibilities of design. Achieving this requires the combination of industrial expertise, aesthetic sensitivity and manufacturing flexibility, recognising that every project presents its own challenges and that the best solutions emerge through genuine collaboration.
For DECOCER, tailor-made ultimately means allowing the material to be conceived from the architecture itself. Perhaps this is one of the defining principles of contemporary design: creating unique spaces through solutions designed not for everyone, but for each individual project. Small format. Big dreams.
