TTA tackles sustainability issues in the tiling sector

TTA has recognised there are many issues around sustainability which affect the tile industry. In 2022, the association established a working group to develop a coordinated industry response to help member companies on their individual sustainability journeys and provide leadership for the tiling sector.

The group has representation from around a dozen companies from across the sector, including tile distributors and retailers, importers, adhesive manufacturers, contractors and logistics providers. It meets on a monthly basis and reports directly to TTA board of directors. Critically its actions and publications are informed by best practice from around the industry.
During the past year the group has produced content for a new page on TTA website at: https://www.tiles.org.uk/sustainability/

This sets out TTA’s vision to “take a leading role in achieving sustainability in the tiling sector, helping our members and the wider industry play its part in achieving Net Zero by 2050”.

Since ceramic tiles have a reference service life of 60 years, TTA is keen to promote the very positive story that tiles can tell. With a lifetime of durability, ceramic tiles are fireproof, waterproof and scratch resistant unlike other floor or wall coverings.

To promote the positive sustainability message around tiles the group has produced the document: 41 Good Reasons to Choose Tiles. The document covers all the key benefits of tiled surfaces from a sustainability point of view, including durability, fire resistance, recyclability, health & wellness, non-porosity, thermal mass and cost-effectiveness.

In order to assist TTA members and others in the industry to be more sustainable, TTA has also produced a document entitled: “Ways to be More Sustainable”. This covers the key areas of energy usage, waste, transport and travel, product sourcing and manufacture, packaging, and where to get advice.

Both these documents were made available for comments at The Tiling Show in May and will be placed on TTA website in due course.
