AQUAPANEL cement board indoor: the backerboard for high-humidity areas

In modern construction, the demand for materials that deliver efficiency, durability, and high performance is paramount. This need is especially critical in spaces exposed to constant moisture, such as wetrooms, bathrooms, swimming pool surrounds, and other high-humidity areas.

Enter Knauf AQUAPANEL Cement Board Indoor, a product designed for both residential and commercial applications.

Meeting the challenges of moisture-intensive spaces
The rise of sleek, open wetroom designs and powerful showers in modern bathrooms highlights the need for robust materials. Water exposure in these spaces is continuous, and can lead to structural damage, mould growth, and costly repairs if unsuitable materials are used.

This is where AQUAPANEL Cement Board Indoor excels, the manufacturer says. The product is reportedly unaffected by water and prevents mould growth, ensuring lasting performance.
In commercial settings, such as swimming pool areas, the challenge is magnified. Constant water exposure, high humidity, and chemicals like chlorine demand a material that doesn’t deteriorate over time. AQUAPANEL, composed of inorganic materials, is designed to stand up to these conditions, retaining structural integrity and reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Superior water and mould resistance
Knauf’s backerboard product is said to be impervious to moisture, making it suitable for high-humidity spaces. Unlike gypsum or wood-based materials, it prevents swelling, warping, and water infiltration, the company says, ensuring longevity in wet areas.

Its water resistance also complements its ability to deter mould growth, which thrives in damp environments.

Lightweight yet durable
Weighing 11kg /sqm, the backerboard is “surprisingly” lightweight, says Knauf. This feature is designed to simplify handling and installation, reduce the structural load, and ensure strength and impact resistance. It’s said to be particularly advantageous in high-traffic areas where durability is critical.

Design versatility
Knauf also says the board supports innovative design. With a bending radius of up to one metre, the product can be used for concave and convex curves, enabling architects to explore “creative, dynamic shapes” in wet rooms and bathrooms.

Additionally, it’s capable of supporting heavy tiles – up to 50kg/sqm using standard installation methods.

Efficient installation
Engineered for ease of use, the backerboard can be cut using the simple score-and-snap method, the company says. This eliminates the need for electric tools or specialist blades to cut the material, with no predrilling required either.

Its 12.5mm thickness aligns with UK plasterboards, removing the need for packers and further streamlining installation. This efficiency translates into reduced labour costs and faster project completion.

Long-term value for residential and commercial projects
Knauf says the AQUAPANEL Cement Board Indoor is a smart investment for any project requiring high moisture resistance and durability. From wetrooms and bathrooms in homes to demanding commercial spaces like swimming pool surroundings, its robust design and technical features provide peace of mind for years to come.
