SkillBuild, a competition for young people in various practical professions organised by GoConstruct, has reopened its registration for 2025. Wall and floor tiling is one of the 10 disciplines represented in the event.
Applicants can register to compete in their nearest Regional Qualifier taking place in 15 locations across the UK. Tutors and employers can enter on behalf of apprentices and learners, too.
The Regional Qualifiers run UK-wide, from April to July each year. These one-day events bring together apprentices and trainees who complete a set task relevant to their trade. Once the qualifiers have finished, the marks are collated and the eight highest-scoring competitors in each specialist skill go through to the next round – the SkillBuild National Final.
Wall and floor tiling competition overview
This competition has been designed to reflect the role of a wall and floor tiler and the standards that are expected in the construction industry, says Go Construct.
Wall and floor tilers decorate, enhance and protect finished buildings with tiles. Tiles may be made from many different materials such as terracotta, porcelain and natural stones including marble, as well as ceramics.
A wall and floor tiler applies various ceramic tiles to walls and floor surfaces. Wall and floor tilers could fix tiles in several locations such as kitchens, bathrooms, shops, hotels, restaurants, car showrooms, churches, swimming pools, spa areas. Tilers need to be skilled at setting out, preparing the surface to be tiled, and cutting tiles to a certain size or shape with hand-cutters or bench-mounted tools. Once tiles have been fixed to a surface, they require grouting and polishing to complete the work.
