“Watertight wetrooms”

A leak-proof wet room is easy to obtain using Kerakoll products, the company says. Below, it explains what to do when using timber panelling on the floor and tile backer board on the walls (the most common combination in the UK) but it can be adapted for other substrates: just ask Tilemaster Adhesives, Kerakoll for details.

Ensure the panels in the timber substrate are dry, level and screwed down firmly with no room for movement. Then installers should apply a layer of Keragrip Eco to promote adhesion. This eco-friendly water-based product is easy and safe to use, the company says. Next, install a layer of cement board using H40 Gel, H40 Advanced or H40 Ultimate to fix it in place. These gel-adhesives are suitable for use on timber substrates as they are said to offer a high degree of deformability. H40 Ultimate is a genuine S2 adhesive and can be used directly on timber without the need to prime first, the company says.

Then, installers should waterproof the area by applying a first coat of Nanodefense Eco with a roller over the walls and floors, followed by Aquastop 120 tape over all joints and then a second coat of Nanodefense Eco to the entire area.

Alternatively, install Aquastop Fabric, a recently launched waterproof and uncoupling membrane, over the entire surface without the need to treat the joints between panels, using an adhesive from the H40 range. Then seal the joints between sheets of the membrane with Aquastop 120 installed with Aquastop Fix.

Next fix the tiles with your chosen H40 gel-adhesive. Kerakoll says these are the perfect adhesives for the large format tiles that are increasingly popular for wet rooms and bathrooms in general, as they are easy to spread, have a high degree of wettability, hold their shape under the tiles, and have no vertical slip.

Installers can grout the joints with Fugalite Bio, Kerakoll’s hypo-allergenic water-based resin grout, and finally apply Silicone Color to all internal joints.
