Improving slip performance on porcelain, ceramic and granite

Slip resistance remains one of the most important performance factors in tile and stone installations. While aesthetic choices often drive material selection, porcelain, ceramic tiles and granite can present challenges when installed in areas exposed to water or frequent foot traffic.

FILA Solutions’ PROGRIP has been developed as a professional non-slip treatment for porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles, granite and other siliceous stone surfaces. The treatment works by increasing the surface’s friction coefficient without forming a film or leaving residue.

When applied correctly, the product does not substantially change the material’s appearance. This is particularly important on design-led projects where maintaining the original finish is a priority. It is also suitable for internal and external surfaces where improved grip is required.

PROGRIP can be used on compatible porcelain and ceramic floors where installed materials do not achieve the required friction performance for their setting. This may include external paving, entrance zones or poolside installations, where improving traction is necessary without replacing the surface. The treatment is also suitable for smaller barefoot areas such as shower trays, bathtubs and spa environments.

On granite and other siliceous stones, it can be applied to steps, thresholds and access routes where surface grip requires enhancement. Where risk is localised, treatment can be carried out on specific sections rather than across the entire floor area.

As with any surface modification, performance should be verified rather than assumed. Establishing baseline slip resistance and confirming results after treatment allows contractors and specifiers to demonstrate that the required standard has been achieved. In the UK and Ireland, pendulum testing remains a recognised method of assessing slip performance and provides reassurance where safety compliance is a project requirement.
