Timber drives merchants’ February sales growth

April 2021

Total Builders Merchants' February value sales were 2.3% higher than in February 2020, with no difference in trading days.  Only three of the twelve categories saw sales increases in February 2021 compared to February 2020, led by Timber & Joinery Products (+18.2%). Sales of Landscaping (+8.6%) and Tools (+2.0%) were also up on last year.

Among those that did less well were Heavy Building Materials and indoor trades, which continue to be impacted by the latest lockdown. Sales were significantly lower year-on-year in the Kitchens & Bathrooms, Decorating and Plumbing Heating & Electrical categories.

The Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) tracks builders’ merchants’ actual sales to builders and contractors using GfK’s Builders’ Merchant Point of Sale Tracking Data. The BMBI represents over 80% of the value of the builders' merchants' market.
