Mapei plays key role in “stunning” surface project at The Creamery

A comprehensive Mapei system has been used to complete a surface project at The Creamery at Castle Cary railway station in Somerset. The project, completed by SMG Screeding and Ken Biggs Contractors, spanned over 250sqm and featured glass and porcelain tiles. The Mapei specification included resin and cementitious flooring, as well as sealant, adhesives and grouts, featuring EMICODE: EC1 Plus certified products with very low VOC’s.

The surface installation, within the café and dining room, included application of Mapei Ultratop self-levelling and rapid hardening mortar, used to fill voids within the original reclaimed metal floor grates to create a flush surface finish. UltraCare Keranet Easy – a ready-to-use acid-based cleaner – was used to clean off the fine residues of Ultratop from the metal grates. Mapefloor Finish 59 W TRP – an aliphatic, water-based matt polyurethane finish – was then applied to seal the Ultratop surface and metal grates.

Wall and floor tiles were installed with two Mapei adhesives and grouts. They included Keralastic T thixotropic adhesive which was used to bond tiles onto steel frame structures and Keraflex cementitious adhesive for tiling onto walls and floors. Tiles were then grouted with Kerapoxy Easy Design – a decorative acid-resistant epoxy grout – and Ultracolor Plus anti-efflorescence, quick-setting and drying polymer-modified grout. Mapei Ultratop, Keraflex, Kerapoxy and Ultracolor reportedly each feature EMICODE: EC1 Plus formulations, with very low VOCs.
