Joe Simpson runs Oxford Half Marathon in memory of his sister

ON 12 October, Tile & Stone Journal’s founding editor and long-time industry figure, Joe Simpson, took part in the Oxford Half Marathon alongside friends and family to honour the memory of his sister, Gina.

Gina was one of the most important people in Joe’s life – a source of endless love, support, and encouragement. A campaigning family lawyer and devoted mother of four, she was known for her intellect, generosity, and warmth. Her final years were tragically marked by Alzheimer’s disease, which slowly took away the sharp mind and vibrant spirit that defined her.

Joe’s motivation ran even deeper. His other sister, Sarah, is also living with dementia. Once a pioneering entrepreneur and co-founder of a UK manufacturer of hi-tech outside broadcast systems, Sarah now has a mental age of between five and six. Joe described having to visit her care home to tell her of Gina’s passing as ‘the hardest thing I’ve ever done.’

For Joe, the run was not just a tribute – it was a mission to help prevent other families from enduring the same heartbreak. Together with ten friends and family members, he raised vital funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, whose pioneering work continues to bring hope through scientific discovery and innovation.

From everyone at TSJ, we’re incredibly proud of Joe’s achievement and the meaningful cause it represents.
