The importance of U values

U values are becoming an important deciding factor in renovation projects to help combat the rise in energy costs and, more importantly, says JACKON, the cost to the environment.

As companies look to reduce their carbon footprint, the materials they choose to build with can provide a key to unlocking the thermal performance within the property.

So, what is a U value? A U value measures the amount of heat lost through a square metre of the relevant material or combined materials. The lower the number, the better U value or resistance to heat loss the material has.

There are many products on the market focused on insulation and, JACKON says, the XPS foam used on JACKOBOARD products also achieves good insulation properties. The product can help maximise wall and floor thermal performance with a range of different board thicknesses. Not only can you increase the thermal performance of the board, you can reportedly benefit from the board being waterproof and a suitable substrate for tiling and plastering.

JACKOBOARD also provides a waterproof, insulated, tiling substrate for underfloor heating projects, the company says. From electric mats to hot water systems, the system is said to decrease warm up times by pushing the heat directly up to the tile layer to maximise the energy used, not just during the initial heat up stage but with the continued thermostat-controlled use of the heating system.
