Community Spotlight: Craig Withnell at The Woodland Spa

Recently, TSJ asked members of the UK’s most active online tiling-focused forum, Tilers Community, for examples of their best work to showcase in our pages. This month, we’re highlighting the incredible work of Craig Withnell Wall and Floor Tiling at The Woodland Spa in Burnley, Lancashire. Located at the Crow Wood hotel, created by Andrew Brown, The Woodland Spa is “arguably positioned to be the UK’s largest luxury spa location,” according to the company, offering a range of thermal experiences.

Craig was in charge of tiling for the spa’s recent expansion, and the results speak for themselves. With help from Stile Tiling’s Andrew Swindlehurst and overseen by main building contractor Gary McGuigan (“who ran the whole project like a dream”), Craig had to showcase a range of skills for this project, laying tiles ranging from mosaics to large format slabs of 2500x1000mm. According to Craig, the floor areas had to flow in line from the roof top, down two flights of stairs, around a mezzanine floor and all around the pool area. “It was a head scratcher to get it all to work,” he says, which sounds like an understatement!

The project also involved a lot of bespoke tile cutting, with Craig creating arched walls and shell-effect tiles. For these tasks, he used a Rubi TZ (which he calls the best cutter on the market) before using Kelmore adhesives and grout to actually secure the tiles.

Craig wishes to express his appreciation for Andrew Brown, owner of the Crow Wood hotel, for “what he’s done for our little town – the whole complex and jobs created. It’s an amazing place.”
