A full system for wetrooms

BAL, a manufacturer of full tiling solutions, now offers a full system for wet rooms, from tanking systems to adhesives and grouts.

BAL Waterproof 1C provides a solution to ensure tiled wet areas are protected from the ingress of water or moisture into the background structure.

The product is a ready-mixed solution – which means no additional mixing is needed on site – and can reportedly be used on most common substrates without priming.
It is ready to tile after two hours, meaning jobs can be completed sooner.

Formulated with fibre-strand technology for improved strength, it can be applied in one-coat on walls (ensuring 0.8mm thickness) and floors (ensuring 1.6mm thickness) with a brush, roller or 4mm notched trowel.

The product is described as lightweight with easy-to-apply rheology and provides coverage of up to 6sqm – making it suitable for a standard domestic shower room, bathrooms or wetrooms.

BAL Waterproof 1C also has sustainable benefits, the company says, with low VOCs and 40% recycled materials.

EAD-certified for new builds
Crucially, BAL Waterproof 1C has received EAD certification for use on NHBC-approved housebuilding sites. In January, NHBC the UK’s leading provider of warranty and insurance for new homes in the UK, implemented new requirements for their members.

This will mean that any house built in the UK (foundations laid from 1st January 2025) will require tiling in wet areas to be tanked with an EAD certified system to receive warranty and insurance, if they are tiling:
Shower over bath OR shower with shower tray, with standard flow rate <12 litres/min – WHEN the substrate manufacturer’s guidance advises a tanking system is still required, or has not passed NHBC Table 2 assessment requirements.

ANY shower over bath OR shower with shower tray, with a flow rate >12 litres/min.
ANY wet room (fully tiled wall and floor, shower area).

To remain compliant, only suitable NHBC accepted products which form a watertight covering for walls and floors should be used.

BAL Waterproof 1C has been tested and adheres to all NHBC regulations, crucially receiving EAD certification ETA 24/1129 to comply with NHBC specified standard EAD 030352-00-0503.

As part of the EAD requirements, BAL Waterproof 1C Tape and BAL Waterproof 1C Matting (when tiling direct to the floor) are necessary, plus BAL Universal Sealant and Adhesive.

EAD certification also requires the use of specific approved tile adhesives with each approved EAD waterproofing system. The company has multiple options from its existing core range of adhesives that can be used with BAL Waterproof 1C.

Introducing BAL Universal Sealant and Adhesive
BAL has recently launched its Universal Sealant and Adhesive – designed for sealing joints, bonding tiles, and more across various surfaces.

The product is suitable for working on bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor projects, or even underwater temporary tile repairs.

A strong initial tack ensures a durable and long-lasting bond, says BAL, making it suitable for professional use where quality and reliability are paramount.

Designed with professionals in mind, the sealant and adhesive are easy to apply, saving you time and effort on the job.

It’s suitable for use with tanking systems – such as BAL Waterproof 1C – as it is paintable – meaning the tanking system can be brought down onto the sealant, providing a waterproof seal.

It can be used as part of the company’s EAD-certified tanking system for NHBC new build projects.

ARDEX Group offers a 10-year product warranty across its entire range, though this does not supersede individual brand warranties such as BAL’s 25 Year Guarantee.
