Geometrics are a key interiors trend for 2018 and that, together with the vogue for all things Art Deco, means zigzag patterns are back in a big way.
With chevrons having replaced offset brick tiles as the wall decoration of choice, zigzag designs are making their mark on floors via statement rugs, stunning solid wood parquet and patterned vinyl, tiles and laminate.
One of the most enticing thing about zigzag designs is just how adaptable they are. In vivid colours and oversized patterns they're contemporary and bold.
On the other hand, a herringbone floor creates instant Parisian-apartment chic … the definition of elegance. Either way, to enhance a period home or add visual interest to a bland, featureless interior, zigzags add real wow factor and make the floor the star of the show. Try a herringbone pattern in a narrow hallway to create the impression of width. Or, in a larger room, use contrasting arrangements of different-sized planks in different hues for impact, or wider planks to add to the feeling of space or proportion.
