“Construction will be dramatically and severely affected”, says Build UK – the organisation that represents Tier 1 main contractors and several construction trades’ federations- in response to the deepening Coronavirus crisis.
Build UK has acknowledged that, in the event of ‘lockdown’ restrictions, most construction sites will have to close, unless they are business or safety critical.
In addition, the organisation warns of the impact on the industry’s supply chain, consisting of multiple layers of businesses, many of them SMEs with a significant amount of self-employed workers
Build UK and the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) have joined together and is calling on the Government to clarify which public sector infrastructure network projects are safety critical, the support available to retain essential workers. There is also a drive to clarify contractual terms and whether force majeure conditions will come into force, as well as to identify how businesses can get positioned to recommence projects as soon as possible.
