The Schueco Gold Award is presented annually to the practice that the Architect of the Year Awards judges deem to have made the most significant contribution to British architecture over the past year.
This year the Gold Award is being presented to Carmody Groarke for their outstanding contribution to the Individual House category. Projects include Highgate House (pictured), Lake Pavilion, House and Studio Lambeth and Fitzrovia House. The practice impressed judges with an exemplary entry in the Individual House category. These four houses share what the practice describes as a common ambition 'to make spaces and details which elevate everyday moments of life to be extraordinary'.
Highgate House, a detached new family house in Highgate, north London, uses a distinctive, load-bearing sculptural brick form to relate carefully to its suburban neighbourhood context. Generously proportioned windows are oriented to maximise views of Highgate Woods at the rear of the property.
This substantial project contrasts sharply in scale with the quirky Lake Pavilion in East Sussex. This 7 by 7m oak-lined guest cabin has a playful drawbridge balcony and is connected to the main house by a dramatic, 40m long galvanised steel tunnel.
The other two projects in the entry dealt with existing spaces and buildings. In Lambeth, south London, a house/studio has been ingeniously shoehorned into a difficult, landlocked brownfield site. Carmody Groarke's design makes use of existing structures and includes a green roof so that the intervention is barely visible from the surrounding existing homes, yet contains crisp, modern and generous spaces.
In London's Fitzrovia, the practice carried out an extensive refurbishment of a Grade II Listed Regency townhouse, introducing a bold and carefully executed glass and Carrera marble extension to bring daylight deep into the plan of the six storey building.
