Last month TSJ reported the sad passing of Terry Buck; one of the UK tile industry’s great characters.
Unfortunately, a production error led to the wrong image being used, for which the Editor, Joe Simpson, is most apologetic. Happily, Terry’s daughter Lynne Martin, has been able to provide two fresh images. One shows Terry ‘suited and booted’ in his tiling heyday, while the other shows him relaxing with his wife Dorothy, known as Dot, rather later in life. Both show the clear twinkle in the eye for which he is so fondly remembered.
An industry legend - contractor, retailer, distributor, and agent - Terry was one of the first in our industry to actively promote both Spanish and Portuguese tiles.
Terry started his career by passing his City and Guilds in Tile Fixing. In 1967, together with Dot, he started Chelmer Tilecraft Ltd, and cemented his position in the local area by creating Moulsham Traders Association.
“He really was a terrific boss. We children all worked with Terry in the business, and he was very protective of all his staff, particularly the girls,” says Lynne.
All four of Terry and Dot’s children worked in the business: Lynne Martin, her sister Cheryl Harper, and their two brothers, Gary Buck and Mark Buck.
Although the family closed the business when Terry retired, Gary still works in the tile industry with his own agency.
