In an exciting innovation this year, the three categories, for which the results are now being announced, were opened up to public judging, whereby members of the industry and other visitors to the Awards website could cast their votes. Tile Fixer of the Year category was open to both public and members to vote, and Wall Tile of the Year and Floor Tile of the Year, were open to TTA members only.

Widening of the franchise around the Awards this year represents a modernisation and updating of this key industry occasion, using social media and the resources of digital communication. The innovations implemented this year have secured a great response from the industry, with over 400 online votes received and a 48% increase in Award nominations, compared to last year!

The full judging panel for all the other Awards is as follows: Joe Simpson, editor of TSJ, who has over 25 years’ experience of writing about the tiling industry; Ian Crowther, head of the TTA Marketing Committee and northern operations manager of N&C Building Products; Paul Luff, chair of the TTA General Purposes Committee and national sales & marketing manager for Larsen Building Products; Russell Sage, well-known London architect who has been involved in some of the capital’s most iconic restaurants, hotels and attractions; Ian Kershaw, chairman of the TTA and managing director of Tiles UK; David Rowley, chairman of the TTA’s supply chain committee and training manager at Building Adhesives Ltd.; Bob Howard MBE, founder member of the TTA and chair of its training committee; Kay Porter, company secretary of the TTA and an active member of its marketing committee since its formation; Emma Jesson, broadcaster and host for the TTA Awards for the last ten years; and Brian Newell, TTA director, technical expert and chairman of Shackerley (Holdings) Group.

Information from the microsite is continually supported and supplemented through the Awards Twitter feed (@ttaawards) and regular e-blasts, as well as through the TTA online newsletter Tilezine. All these promotional channels are giving higher profile than ever before to this years’ Gold Sponsors who include: Shackerley, Schluter, Mapei, FILA, Norcros Adhesives, Lithofin and Bellota. There are still sponsorship opportunities available providing a great opportunity to enable brands to gain recognition in front of the key industry professionals. All packages include complementary tickets, post-event PR and the chance to present an award. More information is available on the website.

“Jonathon Minoli, Managing Director of Minoli, says: “We at Minoli are truly delighted to be recognised by The Tile Association again this year, for the Excellence in Distribution Award.

“As a company we regard ourselves as one of the original distributors within the UK and one of the few that actually invest in the distribution network in the market place.  2014 marks the fourth consecutive year that the judges have awarded us an award which we regard as the most prestigious of the night.

“This award and the recognition of the work carried out by the team at Minoli will only spur us on to more and better things during 2014 and beyond.”

John Harris, Managing Director of Harper & Edwards, who took the Gold Award for Excellence in Tile Contracting, says: “We are delighted that this has come in our 25th year, as recognition for the efforts and hard work of all our staff and tilers since we were founded.  As a London company, the event was easy for us to attend – the choice of venue was excellent and I would like to thank the organisers for all their hard work.”

Patrick Jenner, Regional Retail Sales Manager at N&C Tiles & Bathrooms, who took the Gold Award for Excellence in Multiple Retailing, adds: “These are the first TTA Awards I’ve been to, and it’s a very proud day.  I run five of the six branches around London, and we are continually growing year-on-year, always driving forward. This has come at a great time for us.”

The increasingly high profile TTA Awards once again attracted some of the biggest names in the industry as event sponsors. These included: BAL, FILA Surface Care Products, James Hardie, Laticrete, Mapei, Rubi and Schlüter Systems.

Peter Bell, Managing Director of sponsor BAL says: “The new format of a lunchtime event in London makes a nice refreshing change, and I congratulate the TTA on trying different things.  It all adds to the positive vibe in the industry at the moment.  It is really taking off again, with a genuine recovery going on. Quarter 1 was very strong – everybody is talking the market up.”

For the TTA, the 2014 Awards mark the beginning of a new chapter in the Association’s growth.  TTA Chairman, Ian Kershaw, says: “Firstly, I’d like to congratulate all those who were finalists in our Awards this year. You are all winners and your achievement makes our industry proud. In particular, of course, very well done to those individuals and those companies who came away with the Gold rosettes in the various categories.”

“I look forward to welcoming everybody again in a year’s time, when we will be looking back on what promises to be a very busy year for the TTA, with new branding, new website and a host of other initiatives which will enable us to represent our members’ interests even better.”
“I was particularly happy this year that we were able to raise such a good sum for The Children Today Charitable Trust, showing once again what a warm hearted industry we are.”
