Colour influences every aspect of our lives; from fashion and décor to art and design. For tile retailers and distributors, understanding and anticipating colour trends, offers the ability to attract and retain design-conscious consumers and improve the customer appeal of showrooms at minimal cost.
However, many retailers are unsure where to seek reliable colour guidance. There are plenty of options, such as the fabulous annual colour presentations by Pantone’s Leatrice Eisemann at Coverings, or the informed market intelligence on offer at UK exhibitions like 100% Design or The Surface Design Show.
One thing is certain, colour trends are global and insights abound in most developed countries. As well as the UK and Europe, I follow colour trends in the USA, Australia, Canada, Japan and South America. Looking further afield,this article introduces The Plascon Colour Forecast, which has been South Africa’s leading source of colour inspiration for nearly 20 years now.
Plascon’s 2018 edition was developed following thorough analysis of the way colour is being used across the creative industries. Following this audit, the experts at Kansai Plascon came up with a set of trend and colour stories that truly reflect the global mood.
Along with four colour stories that express the key trends in the world of colour, Kansai Plascon also chooses one colour in the Forecast that captures the overall mood for the year.
For 2018, the Plascon Colour Team chose a Neutral of the Year instead of a Colour of the Year. Amadeus is a hue that is on-trend and directional, but also one that’s easy to incorporate in a range of colour schemes.
As Kansai Plascon Colour Expert Kerstin Eser explains: “Amadeus is a colour with a rare balance: it’s both extremely usable and really interesting. Even though it’s technically from a neutral palette, it’s anything but boring.”
Amadeus comes from the Forecast’s Soft Composition colour story, where it lives alongside a muted palette of classically-inspired colours and bold retro accents. The name comes from the nickname given to Mozart, inspired by his classic but expressive style and irreverent nature. It can be combined with the rest of this palette to create a contemplative but cosy feeling in interiors, and it’s a great base to experiment with the bolder hues from the other colour stories too. It’s also a distinctive colour in its own right and is perfect to add a dose of energy to a space.
Plascon’s Claire Bond says: “In terms of colour psychology, yellow tones are stimulating and warming, so Amadeus is a great pick for social spaces like living rooms and kitchens.”
